What to Do When You Disagree With Your Doctor



…but you’re not convinced.

This wasn’t an issue 10 years ago, but now you can get tests for a range of genetic mutations, including those that confer a greater risk for breast and ovarian cancer.

Before proceeding, ask your doctor what your options are if the test comes back positive. It could mean considering breast-removal surgery or, for colon cancer, it could be as simple as starting colonoscopies earlier in life. And get counseling along with the test. “It’s important to seek out a place that provides [that],” says Lillie Shockney, RN, the administrative director of the Johns Hopkins Breast Center, in Baltimore.

Fat-Blasting Strength and Cardio Plan

Blast fat and calories! Your cardio plans
To burn off all the fat covering those gorgeous muscles you’re sculpting, do 4–5 of these 35-minute interval workouts per week. Why intervals? Because they’re the fastest way to burn maximum calories in minimum time.

The intensity levels below are based on a scale of 1–10, where 1 is kicking back on the couch and 10 is pushing as hard as you can. After each workout, cool down at a slow pace for 5 minutes.

Outdoor walking workout
1.Walk at a moderate pace (an intensity of 3–4) for 5 minutes to warm up.
2.Pick up your pace for 3 minutes so you’re working at a 6–7.
3.Crank your pace up to an 8 for 2 minutes. Take shorter, faster steps, drive your bent elbows back, and let your hips move from side to side.
4.Repeat steps 2 and 3 five more times.

Treadmill workout
1.Walk at a moderate pace with no incline (an intensity of 3–4) for 5 minutes to warm up.
2.Pick up your speed to a 6–7 for 3 minutes.
3.Rev up your pace to an 8, and increase the incline by 2%–3% for 2 minutes.
4.Repeat steps 2 and 3 five more times.

Elliptical workout
1.Use light resistance with a medium ramp (for an intensity of 3–4) for 5 minutes to warm up.
2.Keeping light resistance, raise ramp to high for 3 minutes, aiming for an intensity of 6–7.
3.Lower ramp and increase resistance; work at a challenging pace (about an 8) for 2 minutes.
4.Repeat steps 2 and 3 five more times.

Bike workout (outdoor or indoor)
1.Pedal at medium speed/resistance (an intensity of 3–4) for 5 minutes to warm up.
2.Increase your speed and/or resistance to moderate intensity (a 6–7) for 3 minutes.
3.Up your intensity to an 8 for 2 minutes.
4.Repeat steps 2 and 3 five more times.

Why These Women Wrote All Over Their Semi-Naked Bodies


Have you ever called yourself “too skinny?” Or maybe “not skinny enough?” What about “too tall” or “not tall enough?” These are all labels we place on ourselves; words we let get into our heads for some reason. But the truth is, labels like these don’t define us.

A new body-acceptance photography project created by body-positivity activist Brooke Van Ryssel and shot by Mandi Rae Leclaire is putting that truth on display by using photographs of eight real women.

For the project, Van Ryssel and Leclaire took two individual shots of each woman. The first shot features each woman partially clad; written on their body is the negative label they or another person gave them. Before the second shot, they washed the negative labels away and replaced them with positive ones.

“No matter what the connotation of the label, humans can not be reduced to labels. Our WORTH cannot be defined with words,” Van Ryssel, the creator of @mybodywpg, a body-positive fitness community, wrote in an Instagram post.

She explained that this project had been a dream of hers since she first started her Instagram page, and it’s easy to understand why. When you’re scrolling through social media and see photos of women who appear to have features you wish you had, it’s easy to get caught up in senseless labels.

One of the models for the shoot, Natalie Bell, first wrote the words “ashamed,” “never good enough,” and “not equal,” across her body. When it was time for round two, she left the negativity behind in favor of “powerful,” “proud mama,” and “queen.”

After the individual photos, all of the women shed their labels, both negative and positive, and Van Ryssel and Laclaire shot the entire group au natural in their bras and underwear. The result? Pure beauty.

The group photos also show that when women band together and choose to collectively reject labels, we encourage one another to love ourselves just the way we are. As more of us rise above self-doubt and reject negative labels, the easier it’ll be for all women to do the same.
