Instagram Model Got Bit By a Shark During Photo Shoot



Doing it for the ‘gram can have serious consequences. One Instagram model learned this the hard way while on vacation in the Bahamas—and had a shark chomp down on her arm while she was posing for photos in the water. 

It happened when 19-year-old Katarina Zarutskie waded into the ocean in an area rife with nurse sharks. As her boyfriend and his family stood on the beach, they snapped photos of Katarina, who was apparently unaware that she was about to become shark bait. The impromptu photo shoot ended when one shark swam up to her and bit her left arm.

Zarutskie has about 30,000 followers and runs a blog called Vogue and Vegetables. She’s since made her Instagram private, so her original post is no longer visible online. According to Buzzfeed, she initially posted about her ordeal with the caption, “PSA: Sharks are cute and can nibble at times if not careful.”

In several interviews, Zarutskie talked about her shark encounter.

“A lot of locals that were just excited and encouraging me to swim with them and I saw it as another opportunity to connect with nature,” she told Good Morning America. “Next thing I knew, I was underwater and I felt this and then pulled my hand above my head and I knew I couldn’t get my hand in the water,” she said later in the interview. “When they see blood, that means food. Adrenaline was kicking in and I just knew I needed to get out of the water.”

She told Florida news station WSVN that she’s been taking several medications to treat her wound, which doctors are monitoring. But she has no regrets.

“[My boyfriend and his parents] were screaming at me not to do it,” she said. “It’s just a once in a lifetime experience … I don’t regret it.”

Though this is a promoted experience featured on the Staniel Cay Yacht Club website (where Zarutskie tagged her photo), swimming near potentially threatening sea creatures is concerning. Plus, but it seems like social media pressure could have played a role in Zarutskie’s decision to pose in shark-infested waters. 

Instagram, as we all know, is not reality. But sometimes that line is blurred. Back in 2015, more people died attempting to capture the ultimate selfie than from shark attacks. Jjust a few days ago, three popular YouTubers died while standing on the edge of a waterfall in British Columbia. From Zarutskie’s injury to these recent deaths, remember that no snap is worth such a sacrifice.

Most Depressing States in the United States

Medical Tests You Need – Health



Your doctor examines your colon using a thin, flexible tube called a colonoscope to look for ulcers, polyps, tumors and areas of inflammation or bleeding. The test is your best defense against colon cancer, the third most common cancer in both men and women. While there are other screening tools, including sigmoidoscopy and fecal blood tests, colonoscopy is considered the gold standard: “It doesn’t just diagnose; if the doctor sees adenomas (potentially precancerous polyps), he can remove them then and there,” says Seth Gross, MD, director of endoscopy at Tisch Hospital at NYU Langone Medical Center.

When to get it: Your first should happen at age 50, earlier if you’ve got other risk factors, such as a family history, or if you have suspicious symptoms like blood in your stool. If the test is negative, continue getting one every 10 years.

Cost: $1,100 to $2,800. Insurance pays for the procedure every 10 years for adults age 50 to 75.

Emily Skye Says She’s “Getting Stronger” in a Post-Baby Body Photo Showing Loose Skin



Fitness influencer Emily Skye is enjoying her post-pregnancy workout regimen with her “cutest training buddy ever.” In a mirror selfie with her three-month-old daughter Mia, Skye shared her progress since giving birth.

“Some people might think my progress is due to my genetics or because of breastfeeding but I can tell you it’s got a LOT to do with hard work and consistency!” she captioned the photo, which shows her loose skin. “All those midnight workouts I did after Mia fell asleep and eating healthy meals from my FIT Program are getting me great results.”

She goes on to share that she’s getting stronger and leaner and is in good spirits, which she said helps her mini-me, too. “When I’m happy Mia seems happier too,” she wrote.

Since bringing home baby, Skye has been transparent about the body changes she’s experienced. Last month, she posted a side-by-side image comparing her pre-baby and post-baby abs.

“Physically speaking I will never be the same (which isn’t a bad thing) and I’m making the most of what I’ve got,” she said. “I’ve still got loose skin on my belly but my abs are beginning to make a comeback – which shows me that what I’m doing is working…”

One workout she’s probably doing is her 20-minute core routine, which focuses on developing strong abs as well as the core muscles that help support every body, not just post-partum bodies.

“Almost every woman that I talk to wants to have a great set of abs,” Skye told Health in 2016. “It’s one thing to have strong abs, but it’s more important to have a strong core. From petroleum jelly to Body Glide, experts share their recommendations for the best products to prevent dreaded “thigh rub” chafing.

Unless you’re one of the five people on Earth who have a thigh gap, you’re probably familiar with what the rest of us mortals call “thigh rub”—that annoying chafing that you get when your thighs cozy up together as you walk or run.

Basically, here’s what happens: When your thighs rub together, it creates friction that damages the outer layer of skin, causing pain and inflammation, says Melissa Piliang, MD, a dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic. And when you sweat, moisture sits on the skin and breaks down the outer layer of skin even more. Ouch.

With summer right around the corner, we asked experts for the best options to help stop the chafe.

Lip balm

Since lip balms are slick, they can help keep your thighs from rubbing against each other and creating friction, says Carolyn Bangert, MD, a dermatologist at McGovern Medical School at University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

This is another option that can act as a lubricant and prevent friction, says Dr. Bangert. Bonus: Petroleum jelly can also be used to soothe already-chafed skin. (The only downside? It can be a little greasy.)

An anti-chafing balm that helps prevent the skin irritation caused by friction, Body Glide is an alternative for people who don’t want to deal with messier products. Plus, it also protects against blisters, which makes it especially useful for weekend warriors and athletes alike.

We like: Spanx Women’s Power Shorts ($45; amazon.com)

They’re a good option when you’re wearing a dress: The fabric acts as a barrier against the skin, which helps prevent friction and wick away sweat, says Dr. Piliang.

Baby powder

Since baby powders are good at absorbing moisture, they’re also helpful for preventing chafing. (Though you might want to go with a cornstarch-based product instead of one that contains talc.) And like petroleum jelly, baby powder can also be used on chafed skin to soothe the irritation.

Bandelettes

We like: Bandelettes Elastic Anti-Chafing Thigh Bands ($19; amazon.com)

On first glance, these look too pretty to be useful. But in fact, Bandelettes are specifically designed to ward off chafing. Plus, they’re also recommended by fashion editors and bloggers alike. They’re non-slip, made of silicone, and are cute enough to wear with (or, ahem, without) your favorite skirt.

More Men Are Getting Boob Jobs—Here’s Why



More men are electing to go under the knife—to remove their breasts. Really. That’s according to new statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The stats confirm that there’s been a big uptick in the number of guys undergoing all kinds of cosmetic procedures, from liposuction to tummy tucks.

But the one that caught our eye states that the rate of male breast reductions has increased by 30% over the past five years. This cosmetic surgery treats a condition called gynecomastia, which causes men to have swollen breast tissue. The excess tissue can appear right behind their nipples, causing them to protrude, or it could affect the chest and make a guy look like he actually has breasts.

“Man boobs” is a funny term, but the condition is probably not a laughing matter to the men who have it, which is as high as 30% of all guys, according to one 2014 study. The cause can be hereditary and is often a hormonal imbalance; it can also be the result of obesity, taking meds that affect hormone production, or simply aging.

Why are more guys with gynecomastia hitting up cosmetic surgeons these days? “I think that there are many reasons,” Stafford Broumand, MD, a professor of plastic surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, tells Health. Dr. Broumand says he’s seen an increase in his Manhattan practice at 740 Park Plastic Surgery. “One is plastic surgery is now more acceptable for men and women,” he says.

But also, there are more options available for those who want to be treated, he explains. These include liposuction, liposuction with removal of the breast glands only, breast gland removal with skin tightening, and a traditional reduction surgery that removes hanging skin, visible breasts, and breast tissue.

“Everything is increased with social media and people wanting to look good and people trying to be relevant in a young person’s game, where people are living longer and wanting to be in the workforce longer,” he says.

Though gynecomastia can happen at any age, Dr. Broumand says he tends to see two age groups in his practice: “Young men in their late teens and twenties and men in their fifties and sixties—that’s generally where you see the interest or the inquiry for breast reduction surgery.”

Before undergoing the surgery, Dr. Broumand says that a doctor will assess whether the gynecomastia is hereditary, hormonal, the result of weight loss or gain, or aging, so the root cause of the problem can be addressed.

The operation itself is typically successful, no matter which one a man opts for. “There’s relatively minimal downtime, and now you have a lifetime of a better existence,” he says.

Knowing what you’ll do in an emergency is key to surviving one. Your ER plan:

Call 911: If you can’t move, you’re bleeding heavily, or you have symptoms of a heart attack or stroke, you need an ambulance. EMS personnel can provide lifesaving care en route and determine the best hospital for your needs. 

Or (sometimes) get a ride: As long as you can walk to a car and do not have the symptoms listed above, someone—a friend, a taxi—can take you to the hospital. Don’t drive yourself; and when in doubt, call 911.

Go to the closest hospital: When transporting yourself to the ER, your priority should be to get there as quickly as possible. They’ll stabilize you and transfer you to another hospital if needed.

Make a list: “If you’re unable to respond to EMS providers’ questions, they’ll look in your wallet for info,” says Dr. McGann. “Keep a list there of meds you take along with emergency contacts.” As a backup use an app, like the Health app in iOS or ICE Standard for Android, that can store info on your lock screen.

Texas Girl, 10, Electrocuted After Trying to Rescue Her Kittens from Behind a Dryer


Her mother, Shelby Roos said that her daughter “loved her babies,” referring to the kittens.

A Texas family is grieving after their 10-year-old daughter tragically died after trying to rescue kittens.

Greenlee Marie was trying to rescue her kittens from behind a clothes dryer in her home when she was electrocuted, according to a GoFundMe created by her family.

“On July 7th, Greenlee lost her life in a traumatizing accident at home. She was trying to rescue two kittens from behind her family’s dryer when she was tragically taken from this world,” the GoFundMe read. “At just 10 years of age, she had such a compassionate heart, not just for people but for orphaned and injured animals as well.”

“At the wishes of her beloved parents, fundraising in Greenlee’s memory are being made available to all who knew her and loved her in our community,” it continued. “Her whole life she had enjoyed helping those less fortunate than herself, and had always planned when she was older to become a veterinarian and to help rescue more animals.”

“So in honor of Greenlee we are asking that any donations be made, in lieu of flowers, cards, etc, her family would like to be able to collect funds to continue Greenlee’s passion of helping animals in our community. Please help us in honoring her memory by being her voice for the voiceless.”

Her mother, Shelby Roos told KSLA-TV that her daughter “loved her babies,” referring to the kittens Greenlee was trying to rescue.

“And she would do anything for them. I know she is up there right now with all of her babies,” Roos added.

Roos shared a Facebook tribute to her daughter on Monday calling her a “light.”

“With the heaviest of hearts I want to tell y’all our Greenlee was tragically taken from us Sat [sic] night,” Roos wrote alongside a photo of her daughter sticking out her tongue which was blue.

“She was such a light in this world and everyone she ever met couldn’t help but fall in love with her. She had more compassion for everything living at 10 years old than most will have in a lifetime,” she continued. “Please pray for us as we try to find sence [sic] in the senseless.”

“I ask everyone please continue to respect our privacy in not posing details. I will update everyone as soon as I have more info,” Roos continued. “Please hug all your babies tight because tomorrow is truly never promised. And take peace in the fact that she is in heaven getting love from all the animals she loved with her whole heart.“

Police and the fire department are currently investigating the wiring in the home, according to the Dallas Morning News. A spokesperson for the New Boston Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

While the family had previously complained about electricity issues in the home, interim New Boston police chief Gary McGrary told KSLA it was “too early right now to start placing blame and responsibility.”

Greenlee’s body was sent to Dallas, Texas for an autopsy, the Dallas Morning News reported.

A 15-Year-Old Helped a Blind and Deaf Passenger After the Crew Struggled to Communicate



A kind passenger stepped up to help the plane’s crew communicate with the man.

Even small acts of kindness can make a big difference to your fellow passengers.

While on an Alaska Airlines flight out of Boston last week, 15-year-old Clara Daly found herself in the unique position to help someone in need. Shortly after take off, a flight attendant asked if anyone knew sign language over the plane’s announcement system because the crew needed help communicating with another passenger, Tim Cook, who is both blind and deaf, the Boston Globe reported.

Daly had been studying American Sign Language and was eager to help.

Because of Cook’s challenges, Daly had to make signs into his hands in order to communicate, but it worked. Cook himself was traveling alone, so Daly periodically checked in on him during the flight.

“This was the first time I was ever able to use it,” Daly told the Boston Globe.

During the last hour of the flight, the two passengers sat and talked with one another. Fellow passenger Lynette Scribner posted about the interaction on Facebook and said it “was fascinating to watch as she signed one letter at a time into his hand. He was able to ‘read’ her signing and they carried on an animated conversation.”

“It was a beautiful reminder, in this time of too much awfulness, that there are still good, good people who are willing to look out for each other,” Scribner added.

Daly was originally supposed to be on a flight from Boston to Los Angeles, but it was canceled and she ended up on a flight to Portland with Cook. According to the Boston Globe, she likes to think it was meant to be.

According to Scribner’s post, Alaska Airlines has gotten in contact with Daly and Cook about the happy incident.

Why July Is the Most Dangerous Month To Go Swimming



Lakes, rivers and oceans are linked to disease outbreaks.

Just in time for swimming season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a new report on disease outbreaks associated with swimming in rivers, lakes and oceans.

Between 2000 and 2014, public health officials in 35 states, plus Guam, reported a total of 140 disease outbreaks associated with swimming in untreated recreational waters — mainly at beaches and bodies of water in public parks, the report says. These outbreaks led to 4,958 illnesses and two deaths.

The vast majority of outbreaks with a confirmed cause were linked to gastrointestinal pathogens such as norovirus, Shigella and E. coli. People typically get sick from these illnesses when they accidentally ingest water contaminated by fecal matter. Such contamination can happen through wastewater and sewage runoff, flooding or someone defecating while swimming, the report says.

Most of the remaining outbreaks were caused by parasites transmitted by birds present in recreational waters, toxins and chemicals or harmful algal blooms, the report says. The two deaths were caused by Naegleria fowleri, a rare type of freshwater ameba that enters the nose and destroys brain tissue.

The majority of outbreaks struck between June and August, and nearly 60% happened in July.

Swimmers may be at a lower risk of infection if they stick to “well-operated, treated recreational water venues,” the report says — although a prior report from the agency also detailed plenty of disease outbreaks that could be traced back to hotel pools, hot tubs and other treated recreational waters.

Those who choose to swim in untreated waters should use caution in those that are shallow, poorly circulating, over-crowded, far from toilets and other hygiene facilities or frequented by young children with “no or limited toileting skills,” the report says. Swimmers should also steer clear of water that’s “discolored, smelly, foamy or scummy” and avoid swimming after high rains or floods, according to the CDC.

To reduce disease transmission, the CDC says people should avoid entering public waters if they’re sick and do their best to avoid swallowing water while swimming. Organizations that maintain swimming areas should also try to minimize flooding and runoff contamination, keep wildlife away from swimming areas as much as possible and regularly monitor aquatic bacteria levels, the CDC says.

As a teen, Mary Jelkovsky was obsessed with having “thigh gap”—upper thighs so thin, they didn’t touch and instead had space between them.

These days, the 20-year-old wellness influencer knows that thigh gap is unrealistic. But after she recently saw a thigh gap workout on social media, she was so outraged, she came up with her own cheeky way of showing others that having thigh gap is unhealthy, and prizing it promotes unrealistic body standards.

On Tuesday, she posted what she called her “two-step method” to getting thigh gap. Posing in a white tee and underwear, she wrote: “1. Separate thighs” and “2. Screw it. Love yoself.” She provided more context in the caption.

When she was a personal trainer, “women from all walks of life would constantly use phrases like ‘problem area’ and ‘my biggest insecurity’ to describe their legs or midsection (or both),” she wrote. “It was very sad to hear that a mother of 4 was too ashamed of her body to have sex with her husband or that a college girl didn’t want to go to a pool party until she lost 10 pounds.”

Jelkovsky tells Health she was motivated to share message of self-acceptance because she’s frustrated that so many women still try to achieve thigh gap. This “problem area” continues to cause problems for women today.

“I remembered being in high school when the thigh gap trend was very alive and I spent hours on the internet looking at how to do it,” she says. “The other day I was on Pinterest and I saw an ‘inner thigh workout for a thigh gap’ and I was so shocked that this was still a thing! I don’t want my little sister to grow up in a world where air between your legs has any significance.”

Is There a Limit to How Long Humans Can Live? A New Study Suggests There Isn’t



What they found was that mortality risk essentially plateaus after a certain point for “super-elderly” individuals.

New research has revived one of the longest standing, and biologically fundamental, debates in the life sciences: Is there a set limit to how long humans can live?

The study, published in the journal Science, suggests that maybe there isn’t. (It should be noted that this finding contradicts other, similar research by biologists and demographers, as Nature notes.)

Researchers examined a population of nearly 4,000 Italians who were 105 years or older. What they found was that mortality risk essentially plateaus after a certain point for these “super-elderly” individuals. The risk of death increases gradually the older that someone gets, especially as they reach their 80s and 90s. But, say Sapienza University’s Elisabetta Barbi and University of Roma Tre’s Francesco Lagona, after reaching the ripe old age of 105, the odds of dying within the following year essentially drop down to 50%.

The researchers emphasized the quality of their dataset, asserting that their “estimates are free from artifacts of aggregation that limited earlier studies and provide the best evidence to date for the existence of extreme-age mortality plateaus in humans.” If a mortality plateau really does occur at higher ages, that theoretically means death doesn’t have to be an inevitability.

Not all scientists have reached that conclusion. For instance, a team from New York’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine analyzed the ages of the world’s oldest people and pegged the maximum length of human longevity at somewhere between 115 and 125 years. (For the curious: The oldest person ever in recorded history was a French lady named Jeanne Calment, who died at 122 years of age in 1997.)

“[B]y analyzing global demographic data, we show that improvements in survival with age tend to decline after age 100, and that the age at death of the world’s oldest person has not increased since the 1990s. Our results strongly suggest that the maximum lifespan of humans is fixed and subject to natural constraints,” wrote the Albert Einstein researchers in their 2016 report.

Think your job is stressful? Try being an urologist.

Every job carries a certain level of stress—but the most stressful jobs undeniably take a greater toll on workers than low-stress jobs do. Some people are attracted to these jobs for the challenges and rewards they offer, while others would like to avoid stressful careers. But how do you know if a job is going to be stressful or not?

The Occupational Information Network (O*NET), a U.S. Department of Labor/Employment and Training Administration–sponsored initiative, has the answers. Determining levels of stress is difficult, as everyone carries stress differently and some are better equipped to handle it than others, but the O*NET Resource Center has developed a list of the most stressful jobs based on the amount of stress tolerance people in that field must possess.

These jobs require “accepting criticism and dealing calmly and effectively with high-stress situations” and, unsurprisingly, many of the jobs at the top of the list involve facing life-and-death situations. The 10 most stressful jobs are:

1. Urologist

2. Anesthesiologist Assistants

3. Nurse Anesthetists

4. Telephone Operators

5. Acute Care Nurses

6. Dancers

7. Obstetricians and Gynecologists

8. Police, Fire, and Ambulance Dispatchers

9. Surgeons

10. Transit and Railroad Police

Six of the top 10 most stressful jobs are in the healthcare field, but telephone operators and emergency dispatchers also made the list, proving even desk jobs can be taxing.

Notably, all the jobs O*NET ranked are at least a little stressful: Even the least-stressful profession, Models, had a stress level of 24 (out of 100).
